The Cock and the Cats
Phaedrus
Retold* by Rohini Chowdhury
A Cock once made some Cats carry him in a litter. A Fox, seeing him being carried along in this pompous way, called out, “I advise you to be on your guard, for if you look at the expressions on the faces of those Cats, they look as if they are carrying a booty, not their master!”
The Cock ignored the Fox, for he was quite sure he was in no danger - the Cats were his servants after all.
But the Cats, as soon as they were hungry, set down the litter and jumped upon the Cock and killed him, and then tearing him to pieces, shared the meal amongst themselves.
An extreme feeling of security often leads us into danger.
