The Hungry Dogs

Phaedrus
Retold* by Rohini Chowdhury

Some Dogs saw a raw hide sunk in a river, and wondered how to get it out so they could eat it. ‘If we drink up all the water in the river, we could reach it easily,’ suggested one of the Pack. The others thought that a good plan, and together the Dogs started drinking up the water. They drank and they drank, but the water did not grow less; so they drank and they drank some more…and burst, and died before they could ever reach the hide.

An ill-judged project is not only without effect, but also ends in the destruction of those who engage in it.
